Not on the App Store yet — here's how to get running in 2 minutes
Click the Download Free button. A file called SmackBook.dmg will download to your Downloads folder.
SmackBook.dmg (~5MB) — macOS 12+Open the DMG file. Drag SmackBook into your Applications folder. Eject the DMG when done.
Because SmackBook isn't on the App Store yet, macOS will warn you. This is normal. Here's how to open it:
METHOD A — Right-click (easier)
Right-click SmackBook in Applications → click Open → click Open again in the dialog. Done. You only need to do this once.
METHOD B — Terminal (if Method A fails)
xattr -cr /Applications/SmackBook.appThen double-click SmackBook normally.
SmackBook appears in your menu bar (top right of your screen). Click it to choose your sound pack. Then smack your MacBook anywhere — left palm, right side, trackpad. Your Mac will scream.
Is this safe? Yes. SmackBook only reads your MacBook's built-in motion sensor — the same one that protects your hard drive from drops. It cannot access your files, camera, microphone, or network.
Download free. Try Core Sounds. When you're hooked — unlock everything for $3.99. No subscription. No drama.
No. SmackBook detects motion — it doesn't measure force. Normal taps and gentle smacks are all it takes. Your MacBook has survived much worse in your bag.
SmackBook requires Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Intel Macs don't have the required motion sensor API needed to detect impacts.
It's coming. Direct download is faster to ship, easier to update, and just as safe. You're getting it before everyone else.
Check the Setup Guide above — it covers everything step by step, including the Gatekeeper bypass that macOS requires for apps outside the App Store.
Barely. SmackBook idles at near-zero CPU, only waking on motion events. The motion sensor itself runs at the hardware level and is always on regardless of SmackBook.
No — SmackBook needs the lid open and the app running in your menu bar. It starts automatically on login if you enable that in settings.
Yes. Email hello@smackbook.app and we'll sort it out, no questions asked. Though once you activate Goat Mode, you're not going back.
